Achieving Eco-friendliness and Deliciousness
Development of Barrier Packaging Material for Coffee Beans and Other Foods Using Biodegradable and Compostable Plastic BioPBS邃「

May 11, 2022

Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Group (MCHG) hereby announces that it has developed barrier packaging material for foods using its biodegradable and compostable plastic, BioPBS™ (the packaging material), together with Nakabayashi Co.,Ltd. (Nakabayashi), Oji F-Tex Co., Ltd. (Oji F-Tex), MIB Co,.Ltd. (MIB), NAGASE & CO., LTD. (NAGASE) and Kyokuyo Co., Ltd. (Kyokuyo). The packaging material will be launched in summer 2022 as part of the “asue” lineup, a brand of environmentally friendly products by Nakabayashi.

For the package material, MCHG’s plant-based biodegradable and compostable plastic, BioPBS™, has been adopted as a sealant layer in the inner surface of the package bag. BioPBS™ has increasingly been adopted for packaging material for foods and other products, as the material focuses on the environment and has excellent low-temperature heat sealing and flexibility. Oji F-Tex’s paper-based barrier material, SILBIO BARRIER, which is adopted for the outer surface of the packaging bag, keeps coffee beans fresh by preventing oxygen, moisture and fragrances from passing through.

Conventional coffee bean packages have a plastic valve to control gas generated in the package, as roasted coffee beans release carbon dioxide. In contrast, the packaging material contributes to the reduction of plastic use by employing TiMELESS® technology, which was jointly developed by MIB and NAGASE and integrally forms a degassing system at the sealing portion of packages.

As described above, the packaging material is an environmentally friendly product with high functionality, such as barrier properties and a gas control system. Centering on use for coffee beans, we will offer the material as package material for fruits, vegetables and other foods.

With demand for environmental consideration increasingly on the rise, MCHG will contribute toward creating a circular economy and achieving SDGs through the development of these products.

竕ェBioPBS™竕ォ
BioPBSTM is a plant-derived biodegradable and compostable material developed by MCHG, which owns the basic patent, and manufactured by PTT MCC Biochem Company Limited, which is a fifty-fifty joint venture of MCHG and PTT Global Chemical of Thailand. These resin materials have minimal impact on the natural environment as they are decomposed into water and carbon dioxide by microorganisms in nature. In addition, BioPBSTM shows excellent performance in low temperature heat sealability, heat resistance, and flexibility compared to other biodegradable resins.

竕ェasue竕ォ
The brand “asue,” bringing together “Earth” and “Asu” (which means “tomorrow” in Japanese), is named with the hope that the passion of Nakabayashi, which provides products focusing on environmental (Earth) issues, may be passed down to tomorrow’s (future) world. Products belonging to the brand include straws, paper cups, paper containers, wooden cutlery, paper napkins and wet hand towels, contributing toward achieving a circular society and sustainable lifestyle.

竕ェSILBIO BARRIER竕ォ
Even though it is a recyclable paper-based material, SILBIO BARRIER is a functional paper with high barrier properties manufactured by the Oji Group using papermaking and aqueous coating technologies cultivated over many years. A barrier coating layer added to the base paper prevents oxygen, moisture, and other substances from passing through.

竕ェTiMELESS®竕ォ
TiMELESS® is a gas control technology jointly developed by MIB and NAGASE. The technology, patented by MIB, is applicable to film and paper packaging materials. The fine flow path installed in the sealing portion of the packaging film enables degassing and keeps fruits, vegetables and other contents fresh by controlling gases generated inside of the packaging bag. This environmentally friendly technology helps to reduce food waste and is expected to expand globally. Nagase is the sole agent for this technology.
