Mitsubishi Chemical Aqua Solutions Won the Encouragement Award and the Collaboration Award of the 2023 Resource Recycling Technology and Systems Awards as Joint Partner

The Mitsubishi Chemical Group is pleased to announce that Mitsubishi Chemical Aqua Solutions Co., Ltd. (MCAS), together with Kyushu University and Chikujo Town in Fukuoka Prefecture, jointly received the Encouragement Award and the Collaboration Award of the 2023 Resource Recycling Technology and Systems Awards (organized by the Japan Environmental Management Association for Industry and supported by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry).

Established in 1975, the Resource Recycling Technology and Systems Awards aim to solicit and award outstanding projects and initiatives featuring advanced and sophisticated technologies or systems (including social systems) that contribute to the reduction of waste generation and disposal (Reduce), the reuse of used materials (Reuse), and the effective use of recycled resources (Recycling) in order to encourage and promote circular businesses.
 
MCAS has been working on the Bio-concentrated Liquid Fertilizer Manufacturing Process Commercialization Project in collaboration with Kyushu University and Chikujo Town, Fukuoka Prefecture, with the support from the Fukuoka Research Commercialization Center for Recycling Systems (“FRC”), a public interest incorporated foundation. This joint project received the Encouragement Award because it has contributed to the reduction of CO2 emissions from waste disposal and the use of chemical fertilizers, and is expected to contribute to a sustainable social system as a new circular agricultural business. The project also received the Collaboration Award for collaboration between industry, academia, and government to commercialize the project.
 
Chikujo Town has the first liquid fertilizer concentration facility in Japan. In this project, the facility used membrane separation to remove suspended solids from liquid fertilizer produced from human waste and septic tank sludge and electrodialysis. As a result, the main components of the fertilizer (nitrogen and potassium) were successfully concentrated to approximately 20 times that of ordinary liquid fertilizer. The production of bio-concentrated liquid fertilizer, which is expected to be used in a variety of applications, will also contribute to the reduction of chemical fertilizers, which is a goal of the Sustainable Food Systems Strategy “MIDORI” formulated by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries by the year 2050.
 
MCAS, as the principal researcher of the FRC joint research project, designed the facility, verified its performance, and studied its feasibility as a commercial business, and used the hollow fiber membrane elements manufactured by the Mitsubishi Chemical Group in the concentration process. Encouraged by these awards, we will continue to provide solutions for the liquid fertilizer manufacturing processes of municipalities and enterprises nationwide to promote circular agriculture and contribute to achieving a sustainable society.
