The Mitsubishi Chemical Group Develops Plant-derived Polycarbonate Thermoplastic Elastomer

September 29, 2023

The Mitsubishi Chemical Group (the MCG Group) is pleased to announce the development of a plant-derived polycarbonate thermoplastic elastomer. This cutting-edge creation, boasting an impressive biomass content and remarkable heat resistance, will be unveiled on a panel at the much-anticipated 3rd Sustainable Material Expo TOKYO, taking place at Makuhari Messe from October 4 to 6, 2023.

Developed product harnesses the power of plant-derived raw materials. It boasts a biomass content up to 70%, all made possible through our proprietary material design technology. It has high heat resistance (melting point: 180ºC or higher) and its flexibility remains virtually unaltered across a wide range of temperatures, from frigid lows of -10ºC to scorching highs of 150ºC. Moreover, this innovation boasts excellent transparency, alkaline resistance, and non-yellowing properties, rendering it a versatile choice across a multitude of sectors.

As a specialty materials group dedicated to offering innovative solutions, the MCG Group will continue to pursue further technical development of this new material to provide high- value-added products and drive the realization of a sustainable society.
