Participating in the Council for Activities to Promote the Recycling of Acrylic Resin Products

March 16, 2023

The Mitsubishi Chemical Group (the Group) announces participation as one of the founding members of the “Council for Acrylic Goods Recycling Project” (the council). The council, formed in December 2022, was formed to implement activities to raise societal awareness by promoting acrylic resin product recycling.

Acrylic resin is used for a variety of uses. Recently, acrylic stands and keychains have become popular for promoting “oshikatsu” activities, the enthusiastic support of anime characters or pop icons. Additionally, acrylic was used for partitions installed during COVID-19 to prevent the spray of droplets. Recycling of acrylic products is expected to be a strong contributor toward the protection of the global environment. To further promote the adoption of acrylic recycling, the council plans to conduct awareness-raising events and disseminate information.

As its first recycling awareness event*1, the council plans to host the “Acrylic Goods Thanksgiving” at the Kanda Shrine also known as "Kanda Myoujin", Tokyo. This location, located close to Akihabara, is known as a sacred place for contents, including anime and pop icons. At this event, acrylic goods that are no longer needed are collected from participants. After praying for the success of the event at Kanda Myojin, the Group will chemically recycle the material, allowing it to be reborn as a recycled product.

The Mitsubishi Chemical Group is one of the world’s leading acrylic resin manufacturers. For long time, the Group has developed acrylic resin chemical recycling technology while also considering the social implementation of recycling systems. The acrylic goods market is steadily increasing and demand for acrylic plates is expanding, thanks to the expansion of industries like anime, which have been increasing the production of acrylic goods, including stands and keychains. Through its participation in the council, the Group aims to expand the scope of acrylic resin recycling, including in acrylic goods.
