Message for New Employees by Jean-Marc Gilson, CEO of Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Group

April 1, 2022

Welcome to our New Employees
Please let me congratulate you on joining Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Group. I feel very pleased to be able to welcome you to our company as its new members.

Power of chemistry
Today you are taking the first step in the development of your career. Indeed, you have selected a wonderful starting point for your career path. Chemistry is an industry with outstanding possibilities and that can produce a range of products from ordinary materials. I myself also chose a chemical company as my workplace after graduating from university, and started my career as a chemical engineer.
However, as you may already know, the chemical industry is now facing difficult challenges posed by the needs of society, specifically, calls for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the solution of the issue of ocean plastic waste. Some of you might therefore feel concerned about the future of chemistry, although you like this branch of science.
But please note that as we have more challenges, we have more opportunities. In the healthcare business, we are striving to develop a COVID-19 vaccine and grasp new opportunities in response to the global challenge caused by the pandemic. Also, there are many things that we can do to create a carbon neutral society. We are thus provided with more opportunities to embrace challenges and achieve more growth both as a company and as individuals.

One Company and “Forging the future”

In order to grasp these opportunities, we formulated our new management policy of “Forging the future” last December, and for the implementation of the policy we will substantially restructure our organization this April.
In order to transform our organizations into one that functions truly as one company and as a simple organization that can leverage the capabilities of Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Group companies across the board, we decided to remove unnecessary boundaries between the holding company and the operating companies and to manage both the chemical and healthcare businesses in an integrated manner. Through this new structure designed for greater management speed and for more skilled business execution, we will further increase the revenues of each business to achieve more growth.
Also, for petrochemical and carbon operations, we are looking into spinning off the businesses to enhance their revenue basis through alliance/integration with other companies and through restructuring toward achieving carbon neutrality.

What I ask of you
I ask that each of you will contribute a driving force for our company to forge the future.
I am also confident that all of you are ready to make contributions to the company, and are excited to start.
Finally, in order to help you to achieve growth and demonstrate more of your abilities for the company, let me make the following three requests.

(Safety First)
First, I would like you to always give the highest priority to safety. As a chemical manufacturer, we handle hazardous substances at many of our workplaces, where we have a range of strict rules and procedures. Please note that each of these rules have a purpose, and make “safety first” a part of your daily routine so that you will never have incidents or occupational accidents that might hurt you or your colleagues. Let’s make a concerted effort to ensure safety as one team.

(Compliance)
Next, please comply with the laws, regulations and the in-house rules to continue to earn trust from our stakeholders as a precondition for our business continuity. Once we lose their trust, it will be difficult to regain it. Let’s work together to make compliance a part of our workplace culture.

(Universal rules for working together)
Third, I would like you to obey the following rules so that all members can concentrate on performing their jobs with a sense of purpose and in a comfortable manner:
・Never look down on people.
・People want to contribute and have a right to contribute.
・Listen to different opinions.
・You can challenge anyone.
・Be confident and always propose solutions.
・Everybody fails. Never give up and keep trying.

I’d like to again underline that each of you can help the company achieve further growth. I am convinced that you will take on challenges, meet them, grasp more opportunities and achieve greater results, which will in turn help the company soar to new heights together with you. Let us go forward together to achieve carbon neutrality, to solve ocean waste plastics, to bring hope to those who suffer from diseases, and yes, to make KAITEKI a reality.
