Radiation inspection other than X-rays examination

PET examination (Positron Emission Tomography) is an examination that has been increasingly used recently. PET is used for investigating the lesion of cancer and inflammation, identification of tumor size and location, distinction of benign / malignant, determination of metastatic status and treatment effect, and diagnosis of recurrence. This examination can be done by detecting γ-rays radiated from the tracer injected into the body, and performing calculations similar to CT. As the γ-rays detector, a scintillator conforming to γ-rays is also used.

Both "Medical imaging diagnosis" where X-rays examination was the pioneer, and "Medical care by the radiation use" at the medical site have contributed to advanced medical treatments such as early detection of diseases and treatment of difficult diseases. Further technical development is expected to advance in this field, and it is expected to realize a more comfortable and higher quality of life (QOL) with new technologies such as surgical robots and drug delivery system (DDS).

And X-rays inspection in industrial applications such as nondestructive “facility diagnosis”, and in non-medical service applications such as security inspection typified by baggage inspection, foreign matter inspection for discovering foreign substance contamination in foods, etc. have become increasingly important as the demand increase for safety and security. Moreover, the market for X-rays medical inspection equipment for pet is being formed. Consequently, the role of X-rays scintillators in sophistication, digitization and multi-functionalization of inspection fields is expanding.
