Methyl Silicate OligomerMKC™ Silicate
Mitsubishi Chemical CorporationCharacteristics
[Close]
MKC™ Silicate is made up of oligomers formed by the partial hydrolysis of tetramethoxysilane. By the hydrolysis of alcoxysilanes, silanol groups are generated and make the coating surface hydrophilic. In the rain, the hydrophilic surface enhances dirt removal with a self-cleaning effect.

■ Characteristics
・By adding it to paint, MKC™ Silicate produces a hydrophilic surface that is highly contamination-resistant (self-cleaning effect).
・Compared with an ethyl silicate oligomer, the hydrolysis rate is quick, and it is rich in reactivity. Therefore, the hydrophilic property and the contamination-resistant effect can be acquired at an early stage.
・Various product grades are available with different degrees of silicate condensation.
* MKC™ Silicate Self-Cleaning Effect
After the application of MKC™ Silicate, hydrolysis of alcoxysilane groups creates silanol groups on the coated surface, making it hydrophilic. The contact angle for water on the surface will decrease, and rainwater will be more able to wash away dirt.
Change of the contact angle for water on the coated surface with and without MKC™ Silicate.
