Polymerization and Saponification Degrees of GOHSENOL™ Products

GOHSENOL™ products can be roughly categorized into two types; a fully saponified type comprising mostly hydroxyl groups, and a partially saponified type retaining a certain portion of acetic groups.

Properties of GOHSENOL™

Water Solubility

Water SolubilityThe water solubility of GOHSENOL™ (PVOH) varies depending on its grade. Generally, a grade with a lower viscosity tends to dissolve more rapidly in water. However, the water solubility of PVOH heavily depends on its saponification degree.

Solvent Resistance

GOHSENOL™ (PVOH) products are softened by or dissolved in acids or alkalis. However, they do not dissolve in most organic solvents, animal and plant oils, and greases.

Surface Activity

An aqueous solution of partially saponified PVOH has lower surface tension than that of fully saponified PVOH.

Bonding Strength

An aqueous GOHSENOL™ (PVOH) solution exhibits extremely good bonding strength with base materials that have porous or hydrophilic surfaces such as textiles, paper, or wooden materials.

Membrane Forming Properties

A film made of GOHSENOL™ (PVOH) boasts excellent clarity, gas barrier properties, anti-clouding properties, solvent resistance, antistatic properties, water vapor permeability, etc.

Chemical Reactivity

GOHSENOL™ (PVOH) products are stable polymer compounds, and usually do not develop putrefaction, decomposition, or polymerization when left alone. In the presence of a catalyst, they will exhibit various chemical reactions.

Safety

GOHSENOL™ (PVOH) products are free from acute toxicity, carcinogenicity, and mutagenicity. They are highly safe synthetic resin having little toxicity.
