SHINKOLITE (Acrylite) MR series of acrylic sheets with
anti-abrasion coating now available for large screens

This month, Mitsubishi Rayon Co., Ltd. began selling the world’s largest seamless acrylic sheet as part of its MR series of SHINKOLITE(ACRYLITE) acrylic resin sheets, thereby enabling the product’s use as an anti-abrasion surface treatment on large screens. The product will be sold worldwide, and Mitsubishi Rayon targets annual sales of ¥2 billion for the term ending March 2011.

The MR series is used primarily to protect the surface of LCDs in products with small display screens, such as cell phones. The Company is working to develop new applications for the material, which will include the screens of larger items, such as TVs and PC monitors, as well as highway-side noise dampening panels, and construction materials.

Product Details

Until now, the maximum size of products in the MR series of SHINKOLITE (ACRYLITE) acrylic resin sheets was 2m x 1.3m. The Company is now able to supply a seamless acrylic sheet which, at 4m x 2.6m, is four times that size, and consequently the world’s largest. This new product can be used in large-screen products, and will surely raise panel production yields, enabling customers to increase their productivity. In addition, thanks to advances made in the realization of ultra-thin acrylic sheets, the Company’s SHINKOLITE acrylic sheets, which are half the weight of glass, feature easy formability, as well as superior colorability, a low thermal conductivity rate, and easy recycling.

The Acrylite MR Series

Mitsubishi Rayon’s continuous casting process enables mass production of consistently high-quality acrylic resin sheet, including the addition of a hard-coat layer during in-line production. You can test the hardness of the surface acrylic and other plastics by pressing your fingernail on it. With conventional plastic products, an indentation would result, but the MR series offers superior non-abrasion resistance at 6H (the hardness of a lead pencil). This marks a dramatic improvement, and our products are highly resistant to scratches in normal operating environments. Up to now, the MR Series products have ranged in widths from 0.5mm to 10mm. With the addition of this latest item, production has become possible for widths up to 15mm.
