Purchase of trust beneficiary rights
relating to carbon credits

As a carbon offset method, Mitsubishi Rayon Co., Ltd. has purchased - from Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking Corporation - trust beneficiary rights in a carbon credit trading scheme amounting to 5,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent.
As part of the fight against global warming, by the year 2010 Mitsubishi Rayon aims to lower the energy intensity (energy consumption per unit of product manufactured) of its plants to 90% of the 1990 level or lower. To this end, the Company is taking a number of direct steps to improve the efficiency of energy consumption at its plants, and thus far these efforts have been met by steady success.
We are also directly tackling the problem of emission of greenhouse gases, particularly carbon dioxide, in various ways. With regard to our offices, however, effective steps to save energy to reduce carbon dioxide emissions is not feasible, and thus, as part of our overall initiative, we have decided to offset indirectly carbon dioxide emissions of our Head Office and branch offices through the purchase of carbon credits (in the form of trust beneficiary rights) from Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking Corporation. Other advantages of this purchase of trust beneficiary rights are: 1) purchases can be made in small lots; 2) this method lightens the burden on the Company of the administrative procedures required at the time of acquisition of the rights and subsequently; and 3) it demonstrates the Company’s commitment to supporting the objectives of the Kyoto Protocol.

Note: Carbon Offsetting
Carbon offsetting is the act of mitigating (“offsetting”) carbon dioxide emissions that cannot be directly reduced, by indirect means such as the planting of trees, investing in businesses engaged in the development of renewable alternatives such as wind and solar power, and supporting energy conservation initiatives, methane capture projects, and so on. As the carbon dioxide emissions of our offices is not under our direct control, we have chosen to use the carbon offset method to play our part in the fight against global warming.
