MRC Awarded Micro-filtration Membrane 《STERAPORE》 Supply for the Largest Water Treatment Plant in South Korea

Mitsubishi Rayon Co., Ltd.

Mitsubishi Rayon Co., Ltd. (MRC, Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Hitoshi Ochi) is pleased to announce that its micro-filtration membrane element, “STERAPORE”, will be installed in one of South Korea’s largest water treatment plants equipped with Membrane Bio-Reactor (MBR) systems to be built in Hwaseong City, Gyeonggi Province.

Project Overview
  1. Client: Korea Land & Housing Corporation
  2. Contractor: Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd.
  3.  Location: Hwaseong City, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea
  4.  Project Name: New Construction of Water Purification Center in Hwaseong-Dongtan General Industrial Complex
  5.  Designed Capacity: 91,500m3 per day (First Phase)
*122,000m3 upon completion of the second phase of the project
  6.  Commencement of Work: December 2012
  7.  Start up of Operation: 4th quarter of 2014 (Scheduled)

MBR is the combination of a membrane filtration process with a suspended growth bioreactor, and is now widely used for municipal and industrial wastewater treatment.

Features of MBR Technology Compared to Conventional Processes
  1. Space-saving: Operating with a high concentration of mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS), MBR systems require smaller reaction tanks and need no final settling tank or sludge concentration tank.
  2. High water quality after treatment: Filtering through micro pores with an average diameter of 0.4m, MBR systems produce high-quality treated water free of E.coli and protozoa to enable water recycling.
  3. Easy maintenance: The membrane-based solid-liquid separation ensures easy maintenance with almost no need to pay attention to sedimentation.

《STERAPORE》 has been installed in more than 3,500 hollow-fiber micro-filtration membrane systems for sewage and wastewater treatment in worldwide. As a global leader of membrane supplier, we are now expanding our wastewater treatment business.
For more than 10 years MRC has been developing the partnership with Hyundai Engineering Co., Ltd. and installed more than 100 systems in South Korea. In 2008, the sewage treatment plant in Cheonan City, South Korea, also equipped 《STERAPORE》 and it was one of the world’s largest MBR wastewater treatment facilities at the time.
