Mitsubishi Plastics, Inc. (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President Takumi Ubagai) hereby announces its launch of regular sales of Verde Plus1, a brand of vegetable harvested at a sunlight type plant factory installed within our Nagahama Plant (located in the city of Nagahama, Shiga Prefecture).
Mitsubishi Plastics adopted the sunlight type plant factory2 manufactured by our subsidiary Mitsubishi Plastics Agri Dream Co., Ltd., which has sold more than 120 such plants in Japan. We installed the facilities in our Nagahama Plant in February 2014, upon making arrangements enabling work even by challenged personnel. Thereafter, we performed the sequence of tasks including hiring, cultivation tests, confirmation of quality, and selection of sales channels.
Because the factory was judged to have good prospects for commercially feasible operation, we launched in-house sales of salad spinach which was harvested there and can be eaten raw, thanks to its lack of an acrid taste. We plan to gradually wide the sales to include restaurants in nearby prefectures.
The Verde Plus brand of vegetables harvested at the factory is cultivated without use of agricultural chemicals in the period of vegetation. They feature high levels of safety and security as well as added value. We are going to publicize these features among customers and work for expansion of sales channels for the vegetables.
1 The brand name of the vegetables we provide. “Verde” is Italian for “green.”
2 The plant factory is a system for cultivation of vegetables based on a hydroponic system with solar light. Cultivation begins with the growth of seedlings in a completely closed seedling production facility using artificial light. The seedlings are later moved into a greenhouse which is made with highly functional film that screens out ultraviolet rays and otherwise controls the environmental conditions. The factory enables systematic and stable cultivation of vegetables with comparative ease.
