Increase in production capacity for the co-extruded, multi-layered film DIAMIRON

Dec. 9, 2013

Mitsubishi Plastics, Inc. (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President Takumi Ubagai) is installing a new production line within its Azai Plant (located in Nagahama, Shiga Prefecture), for DIAMIRONTM, its co-extruded, multi-layered film*1 which is used for food packaging and in a wide range of other fields. At the same time, it is transforming some space into a clean room and constructing a setup enabling production of high-quality products in a cleaner environment. The expenditure required for this project will amount to about 1.4 billion yen. The new production line is slated to swing into regular operation in October 2014.

We at Mitsubishi Plastics have positioned the co-extruded, multi-layered film DIAMIRONTM as one of our growth businesses and are working to expand its sales. It is a high-performance film offering a diversity of features that can be customized in accordance with customer needs in respects such as gas-barrier performance, easy-peel properties, and high heat-resistance. It has posted particularly extensive sales as packaging (deep-draw packaging*2) for products such as ham and sausage. This customization of functions in correspondence with needs has been given high marks by customers, and the demand for DIAMIRONTM has been steadily growing. For a further expansion of this business, Mitsubishi Plastics is pursuing programs of joint development with clients who intend to employ new types of packaging (packaging technology). In the food product and medical fields, there are needs for the construction of a setup enabling production under a cleaner environment.

In response, Mitsubishi Plastics has decided to meet the needs for a higher production capacity and cleaner environment by building a new production line and turning some space into a clean room in the Azai Plant. As noted above, this requisite investment amounts to about 1.4 billion yen, and the line is scheduled to commence commercial operations in October 2014.

We are committed to continued efforts for expansion of this business by provision of new types of packaging grounded in actual client needs as solutions in various fields, including food products, medical items, and industrial products. In so doing, we are going to make maximum use of the superior capabilities and quality of DIAMIRONTM as well as our abilities to propose new applications for it. We are also going to consider future expansion of production capacity as necessary, in step with demand growth.
