Mitsubishi Plastics obtains official certification for its mirror finish ACM as a non-combustible material

Jun. 5, 2012

Mitsubishi Plastics, Inc. (head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President Takumi Ubagai) announces that its new product “ALPOLICTM/fr-Reflective Finish” (hereinafter, “ALPOLICTM/fr-RF”) has been accredited as a non-combustible material by the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (Certificate No. NM-3415). The product is an aluminum composite material (ACM) with a mirror finish, which has been developed to reduce production costs and was launched in April of this year.

ALPOLICTM is a three-layered composite panel, composed of two skins of aluminum and the plastic core such as polyethylene. Because of its superior flatness, workability and ease of installation, ALPOLICTM has been widely used as building (interior / exterior) materials, industrial materials, signage materials, etc. not only in Japan but also in many countries around the world.

ALPOLICTM/fr-RF is a mirror-finish shatter-resistant ACM launched in April. It has the material properties almost equivalent to that of “A-LOOKTM” (which was previously produced and sold as one of the ALPOLICTM series). Mitsubishi Plastics has successfully reduced the production cost of ALPOLICTM/fr-RF by 17% compared with A-LOOKTM, by switching from the conventional mirror finishing process using electroplating to a new method using aluminum plates which have undergone anodized processing as the surface of ACM. The use of anodized plates also enhances the brightness of the material (note: subject to individual variability). Another characteristic of ALPOLICTM/fr-RF is that it incorporates a fire-retardant (fire-safe) core. The acquisition of official certification as a non-combustible material by the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (Certificate No. NM-3415) will enable the product to offer a much wider range of applications for interior purposes.

By setting a sales target of 100 million yen in FY2012, Mitsubishi Plastics intends to further promote this minister-certified ALPOLICTM/fr-RF as a mirror finish ACM with lower costs suitable for interior materials of shopping malls and entertainment facilities.
