Introduction of a transparent high gas-barrier film

Feb. 1, 2012

Mitsubishi Plastic Inc. has introduced TECHBARRIER™-MX which offers a high gas barrier and UV-filtering despite a transparent film on February 1 2012. TECHBARRIER™-MX is targeted for the packaging of pharmaceuticals, medical devices and electronic devices which require high gas-barrier and UV-filtering alternative to Al foil.

Application examples

Problem
A variety of technologies are currently used for packaging materials to protect from oxygen, humidity and UV. Al foil laminated film is mainly utilized for this purpose. Al foil laminated film is not transparent, therefore the content is not visible until opened, and RFID is not working because Al foil cuts off the RFID signal. “Contents visible” concept becomes popular and inevitable for the safety from production liability point of view.

Solution
This new transparent barrier film, commercialized by Mitsubishi Plastics, has unique properties, not only high gas barrier but also UV-filtering. In terms of gas barrier property, O2TR (oxygen transmission rate) is 0.08 [cc/m2/day/atm at 25℃, 80%RH] and WVTR (water vapor transmission rate) is 0.05 [g /m2/day at 40℃, 90%RH]. This product may enable to replace opaque packages to transparent ones.

Application

Packaging film for medical devices, pharmaceuticals and all kinds of oxygen, humidity and UV sensitive materials
