Mitsubishi Plastics, Inc. (head office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; president: Hiroshi Yoshida) has developed AUTORL™ AC moisture-permeable waterproof sheets. Used between the wall exterior and insulation of ordinary homes, AUTORL™ AC secure both moisture-permeable and waterproof. Both sides are also treated with a proprietary aluminum coating, causing them to reflect radiant heat from the walls, giving them an insulating property of reducing the amount of heat that penetrates into the inner walls. Nationwide sales will begin on November 20th, 2009.

AUTORL™ AC |
Ordinary homes are becoming increasingly airtight and insulated in recent years. While this improves the efficiency of heating and cooling, thus making the home more energy efficient, airtight and insulated homes cause condensation to form inside the walls, which could reduce the home's durability. For this reason, in wooden homes a ventilation layer is placed between the outer wall material and the insulation material. A moisture-permeable waterproof sheet is used in this space to prevent the infiltration of rainwater from outside, while allowing moisture to escape outside via the ventilation layer.
MPI has been developing and marketing moisture-permeable waterproof sheets supporting airtight/insulated homes since 1991. This new type of heat-blocking water-permeable waterproof sheet, AUTORL™ AC, was less expensive by using proprietary MPI technology to coat the material with aluminum having a high rate of infrared radiation reflection. The top surface of the sheet (the side facing the outer wall) is coated in a dot pattern, while the entire bottom surface (the side facing the inner wall) is coated. This increases the heat-blocking performance, while maintaining the moisture-permeable and waterproof properties. As a result, AUTORL™ AC can keep the temperature of the inner wall about 3oC cooler than conventional moisture-permeable waterproof sheets (according to MPI tests of heat-blocking performance).
MPI will actively market AUTORL™ AC as an environmentally friendly product to the new-home construction and renovation/remodeling markets, and to builders, housing manufacturers, architectural firms, construction and design companies, and others. It aims to reach ¥500 million in sales after two years.
●Features of AUTORL™ AC
・Scale-shaped aluminum particles are used to coat the top surface (the side facing the outer wall) in a dot pattern, while the bottom surface (the side facing the inner wall), which is made from nonwoven cloth, is fully coated. This allows the new sheet to block heat, while maintaining the same level of waterproofing and moisture permeability as MPI's previous products, thus helping homes to be more energy efficient.
・The aluminum coat is applied using proprietary MPI coating technology that increases the durability of the heat-blocking performance due to low oxidation by heat or moisture.
・A nonwoven cloth is used as the base material, and the resulting thickness makes this product extremely easy to work with in construction.
・The sheet was made to reflect less visible light, reducing glare during construction, and making it easier to work with.
