Mitsubishi Chemical Establishes Mass-production Technology
for Plant Oil-based Carbon Black
Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation
Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (MCC; Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Hiroaki Ishizuka) today announced that it has established the technology to mass-produce carbon black from plant oil with high efficiency.

Currently, carbon black has been mass-produced from coal- and petroleum-derived heavy oils, which are high in aromatic compounds (e.g. anthracene) such as creosote oil and ethylene residual oil.
In contrast, it has been difficult to mass-produce carbon black from plant oils using conventional methods because oils such as ricinus and resin oil contain some aromatic compounds.

MCC succeeded in mass production of plant oil-based carbon black by drawing upon its unique, high-performance carbon black manufacturing technology, in a move to transfer materials from coal- and petroleum-derived mineral resources to renewable resources derived from plants.
In addition, rubber and plastic compounds made with plant oil-based carbon black feature excellent processability.

MCC started test production at its Kurosaki Plant in December 2010, and started supplying plant oil-based carbon black to its first customer in July 2013.

MCC continues to look into expansion of the production system while assessing market growth.

[About carbon black]
Carbon black consists of fine carbon-based particles. Its various properties are controlled in production by incomplete combustion of oil and gas. Carbon black is used in large quantities mainly for tires as superior rubber reinforcement. It is also used as black pigment for printing inks, colored resins, paints and coatings, and tonners, and for antistatic films and fibers as a conductive additive.
