Roppongi Hills Christmas Tree Features VELVETM OLED Lighting Panels |

Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation |

Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (MCC; Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Hiroaki Ishizuka) today announced that this year's Roppongi Hills Christmas tree brightened the season with VELVETM organic light emitting diode (OLED) lighting panels - sold through MC Pioneer OLED Lighting Corporation (MPOL; Head Office: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; President: Satoshi Muroyama), which is a joint company of MCC and Pioneer Corporation (Pioneer; Head office: Kawasaki-shi, Kanagawa; President: Susumu Kotani).
The 10-meter symbolic tree stood in front of 66 Plaza, the entrance to Roppongi Hills, which is owned by Mori Buildings Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Shingo Tsuji), and was lighted with 216 VELVETM OLED lighting panels for the Roppongi Hills' 10th Anniversary Christmas celebration of lights.
The illumination design was created by lighting designer Satoshi Uchihara, who also designed the lighting at ARK Hills Sengokuyama Mori Tower and the Haneda Airport International Terminal.
Asked why he selected VELVETM panels, Mr. Uchihara said, “For the Christmas tree that was to symbolize Roppongi Hills, I used state-of-the-art OLED lighting, which is 'friendly to people and the environment, and expresses rich and varied colors. Japan leads the world in this kind of technology and I think this illumination source will see a wide range of uses from now on.”
The VELVETM panels used in this event were specially rainproofed, so for the first time, OLED lighting could be used longer periods.
The soft, easy-on-the-eyes lights reproduced by the tone and dimmer functions, which are unique to VELVETM, were perfectly in tune with the Christmas tree motif, making it easy to create colors reminiscent of candlelight and glowing amber tones that remind viewers of fine whiskey. As a result, the whole plaza was wrapped in an atmosphere of warmth and joy.
MCC and Pioneer continue to work proactively through MPOL to propose new uses for OLED lighting by making the most of its advantages, pioneering new markets around the world.
The company has targeted initial shipping dates of January-March, 2014 for mass-produced OLED lighting modules produced with a wet coating process for the light-emitting layer, aiming at full-scale development of the OLED lighting business.
