Establishing a New Mass-production Facility of
Cathode Materials for Li-ion Batteries
Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation
Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (“MCC”; Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Yoshimitsu Kobayashi) has decided to establish a new mass-production facility of cathode materials for Li-ion batteries at its Mizushima Plant (Location: Kurashiki-shi, Okayama; General Manager: Yasuhide Ishikawa).

With rapid spread of portable electronic devices such as mobile phones and note PCs in recent years, the demand for Li-ion batteries has increased dramatically. Since Li-ion batteries produce an average voltage with high energy density approximately three times higher than that of nickel-cadmium batteries or nickel-metal hydride batteries and are designed to be lighter and compact, new applications such as use in hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and rechargeable batteries for electric tools are anticipated in the future.

As a result of development of cathode materials spanning more than ten years, MCC has succeeded in producing a cathode material that features high power output characteristics suitable for HEV applications and reduced content ratio of costly cobalt, wining high acclaim from customers. While trial production has been conducted at the Sakaide Plant since 2005, MCC has decided to establish a new mass-production facility with an annual production capacity of 600 tons at its Mizushima Plant as the first step toward to become a leading supplier of cathode materials. The facility is scheduled to be put into operation in autumn 2009.

MCC positions its battery materials business as a growing enterprise with the aim of expanding into new applications such as HEVs in addition to Li-ion batteries for portable electronic devices, an area where increasing demand is anticipated. MCC already has a record of more than 15 years in the sales of electrolytes and anode materials and aims to expand its battery materials business as a total solution provider in the field of Li-ion batteries with the launch of full-scale mass production of cathode materials.
