Dissolution of Mitsubishi Kagaku Institute of Life Sciences
Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation
Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (MCC; President: Yoshimitsu Kobayashi; Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo, Japan) has decided on the dissolution of Mitsubishi Kagaku Institute of Life Sciences (MITILS; Chairman: Akihiro Tobe; Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo, Japan), a wholly owned subsidy of MCC. The dissolution is scheduled to take place at the end of March 2010.

MITILS was established in June 1971 as a first private institute for fundamental research of life sciences with a view to the future of the chemical industry. From the start, MITILS has achieved a great number of research results to understand the molecular mechanisms of human genome and proteins. Since April 2004, it has been pursuing research under the mission: “Fundamental research for better understanding and treating human diseases.” In the course of playing a role as a pioneering company of life sciences in Japan, MITILS has implemented a large number of highly advanced research projects in life sciences and produced more than 100 professors.

However, the situation of life science area surrounding MITILS has changed greatly since the institute was established. These days, a large number of universities are very active in research related to the life sciences, while a number of national and private institutes have also been built to pursue research in the field. The MCC Group and the Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Group have also achieved great developments in their medical and pharmaceutical businesses. In particular, R&D activity in medical and pharmaceutical fields has changed significantly both in terms of quality and scale. In such environmental changes, the expected mission of MITILS, “to turn our endeavor for life science development and its results into business profits so that we can contribute to society through our business operation,” is considered rightfully fulfilled. Based on the review of these changes and the new direction and resource allocation of the R&D of the entire Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Group, a decision was made to dissolve MITILS at the end of March 2010.
