Announcing the sale of the world first 2x HD DVD-R
and the single-sided double-layer 1x HD DVD-R DL
with inkjet printers compatible labels
Mitsubishi Kagaku Media Co., Ltd.
Mitsubishi Kagaku Media Co., Ltd. (Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Shigenori Otsuka) announces the sale of the recordable 2x HD DVD-R 15GB (for Data/Video), with inkjet printers compatible labels, and the recordable single-sided double-layer 1x HD DVD-R DL 30GB (for Video), which is also compatible with inkjet printers, from the middle of February and the beginning of March respectively.

With the spread of digital broadcasting, there is an increasing demand to be able to record high-definition images such as hi-vision contents in its original form. Also, with the increasing high-resolution of digital cameras, there is a need for high volume recording media in data field. We have been selling our write-once recordable HD DVD-R since 2006, but now we introduce 2x speed HD DVD-R, as well as inkjet printer compatible single-sided double-layer 1x HD DVD-R DL which further extend the choices available for consumers. Compared to the previous 1x speed version, the new 2x HD DVD-R can be recorded at about double the speed, virtually halving recording time.

Our HD DVDs use high precision mastering technology*¹, precision molding technology*², and develop materials for our recording layers, all of which leads to the kind of high level of reliability required from a HD DVD that is worthy to be called the next generation of DVDs.

For our HD DVD-R, we have employed a proprietary high sensitive organic dye recording layer, which achieves a wide power margin, read stability, and durability for long term preservation of recorded images. With our new 2x version with the organic recording layer, we have not merely made it possible to record at the same recording power as the 1x version, at twice the speed, but have also been successful in further extending the power margin (±25%). Read stability has also been greatly enhanced to more than 1 million times*³, meaning that the same high resolution images and high quality sound can be enjoyed even with repeated playback.

Moreover, our new Single-sided Double-layer disc has made full use of all of the experience gained from the production and technology involved in the world's first single-sided double-layer recordable DVD. For production, the same 2P transfer method is employed as that used for DVDs. The 2P transfer method is the most compatible method for recordable discs using organic dyes, and has a great advantage in terms of forming accurate recording markings in the organic dye recording layer.

The Mitsubishi Kagaku Media/Verbatim Group aims to become a recording media company that continues to create new values demanded by the time.

*¹. Mastering Technology: Manufacturing technology for the Stamper (master) which is the basic portion for the manufacture of the optical discs.
*². Molding Technology: Technology which allows for the precise transfer of guiding slots (grooves) in each plastic board.
*³. Performance of testing associated with HD DVD-R specification ver.1.1 showed success in achieving a read stability of more than 1 million times.
