Announcing the sale of the 8cm Blu-ray disc (BD)
for Blu-ray video cameras
with labels that can be printed with inkjet printers
Mitsubishi Kagaku Media Co., Ltd.
Mitsubishi Kagaku Media Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Shigenori Otsuka) announce the sale from the middle of February of Blu-ray discs (BDs) for video cameras, the 3-pack of both 8cm recordable BD-R and 8cm rewritable BD-RE, with labels that can be printed with inkjet printers. As with the regular label type, which is currently available in the market, these are one-sided 7.5GB discs which allow 60 minutes of continuous recording of high definition, full high vision 1920 x 1080i picture.

The need for high definition picture is growing among video camera users. These days, everyone wants to be able to record their personal videos with high vision quality. In conjunction with the release of BD compatible video cameras, we began sale in August 2007 of BD that allow for the recoding and saving of extended time high definition pictures. Our latest product also includes labels that allow for the creation of your own original designs. In addition to the label face being able to be printed on with an ink jet printer, it can also be written on with water or oil based pens.

As with currently available BD, these discs are particularly strong in the areas of repetitive playback and long-term preservation. Manufactured with optimized technologies that support reliable video recording, including high precision mastering technology*1, the use of materials developed specifically for the recording layer and hard coat, and precision spin coating technology. Also, the highly efficient hard coat protects the disc from scratches, dust, and fingerprints, making it safe to change discs inside or outside.

The Mitsubishi Kagaku Media / Verbatim Group aims to become a recording media company that continues to create new values demanded by the time.

*1. Mastering Technology: Manufacturing technology for the stamper (master) which is the basic portion for the manufacture of the optical discs.

[Characteristics of Mitsubishi Kagaku Media's BD]

•Recording Surface on BD-R Made with unique MABL (Metal ABlative Layer)
On the recording surface's MABL (Metal ABlative Layer), made with Mitsubishi Kagaku Media's own unique ablative method using a special metal nitride, pits are formed through the breakdown of the recording surface's material. As the metal nitride is chemically more stable than metal alone, the disc's storage capability over the long term is comparable to the highly-reliable AZO recording dye films; furthermore, it achieves an extremely wide power margin, which makes it difficult for the recording to be affected by fluctuations and variations in the drive's recording power.

•Mitsubishi Kagaku Media's Own SERL (Super Eutectic Recording Layer) Film on the BD-RE
The rewritable BD-RE uses the SERL (Super Eutectic Recording Layer) technology, developed in-house at Mitsubishi Kagaku Media, for its recording film. Ever since Mitsubishi Kagaku Media was the first company in the world to apply this recording layer technology to its 12X CD-RW, it has become a standard in high-speed, durable rewritable optical discs. Like the BD-R, the BD-RE boasts an extremely wide power margin, its recording properties remain stable over a long period of time, and its advanced durability makes it suitable for repeated recording and playback.

•Advanced Surface Protection Layer (Cover Layer, Hard Coat Layer)
Mitsubishi Kagaku Media has developed a protective layer for the disc surface by making optimum use of its capabilities in creating hybrid organic and inorganic coating materials. The protective layer is highly resistant to scratches, dirt and fingerprints. As a result, users can safely use these discs even without a cartridge case.

•Precise Spin Coating Method
Mitsubishi Kagaku Media's own precision spin coating method has been adopted in the manufacture of the cover layer and hard coating. This has achieved an extremely uniform thickness across the whole layer to within±1µm. For the 4X BD-R and the 2X BD-R DL discs, an even more advanced spin coating method was used, creating a surface smoothness of 1/100 micron order. As a result of this, the characteristics of the servo are also greatly improved, and stable data transfer can be attained even at high recording speeds.

•High Precision Mastering Technology
Mitsubishi Kagaku Media has also made excellent use of its high precision mastering technology that it has built up over the years. Compared to DVDs, BD requires a narrower track pitch in the grooves in order to raise the recording density (0.74µm for DVDs, 0.32µm for BD). Besides developing a deep UV laser exposure device, by optimizing its mastering process, Mitsubishi Kagaku Media achieved ultra fine recording grooves on its BD as a result of optimizing its already advanced mastering process.

•Inkjet-compatible Label
The same "Double-layer ink reception layer" used on Mitsubishi Kagaku Media's inkjet-compatible DVD series has also been adopted on its Blu-ray disc series, which means that the ink will dry quickly and fix well. Not only can the labels be printed on with normal household inkjet printers, but they can also be handwritten with oil-based or water-based ink pens. The labels are white, so the printing stands out clearly.
