Mitsubishi Kagaku Media Co., Ltd. (MKM)（Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Shigenori Otsuka) will launch barrier-free recordable CD (CD-R) media that surface Braille can be read with tactile impression, in August 2007. By printing protruding Braille dots on the surface of a disc, not only can its specifications and capacity be read but its front and reverse sides can be identified.
Optical recording discs such as CDs, DVDs, etc. come in multiple specifications each such as recordable and rewritable, however their shape is identical. Because of this, we commercialized a disc that could be identified easily by anyone in response to many customers complaining of the difficulty of telling discs apart after opening their packaging. Also, for the development of this product, we received enormous help from related organizations who conducted surveys in the conceptual phase and actually tested the feel of prototypes.
We were able to print Braille dots using two layers of high viscosity ink developed by our company (one layer can be printed to 0.05mm in height making the over 0.1mm in possible height). In addition to the height of the dots, we used slippery ink for the surface of the disc making it smooth to the touch to facilitate the recognition of the dots standing out along it.
We believe that providing convenient and user-friendly products for our valued customers is an important mission and we are now examining the possibilities for Braille DVDs in the future. The MKM/Verbatim Group aims to become a recording media company that creates new value that surpasses our time.
