MKM announces the world's first 8x recordable single-sided
dual-layer 8.5 GB DVD-R DL disc |

Mitsubishi Kagaku Media Co., Ltd., (MKM) (Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Shigenori Otsuka) today announced the launch of the world's first 8x recordable single-sided dual-layer 8.5 GB DVD-R DL (dual layer) disc, which will be in retail outlets in Japan by late April.
MKM Chief Information Officer Shigeru Tamura commented, "The disc enables 8x speed data writing*1, which is almost twice the speed of the current discs, and the disc not offer just high capacity of recorded data, but also compatibility with a wide range of DVD players and DVD drives".
As a single-sided dual layer disc pioneer, we have developed and launched*2 a full lineup of dual layer products compatible with the various formats currently available. In addition, we fully intend to draw upon the storehouse of technologies we have succeeded in compiling to stay at the cutting edge in single-sided dual layer discs.
MKM pointed out that in Japan the new product would be marketed under the Mitsubishi brand and under the Verbatim brand in overseas markets, as are all other MKM products.
According to data compiled between January and December 2005 and announced by the Santa Clara Consulting Group (SCCG) *3, MKM and its Mitsubishi and Verbatim brands accounted for the top share of CD and DVD discs worldwide. Following No.1 share rankings in 2003 and 2004, MKM marks a No.1 market share for the third year running.
