Mitsubishi Kagaku Media Co., Ltd. ("MKM") (Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Shigenori Otsuka) today announced the late July launch of a new single-sided dual-layer 8.5 GB DVD-R disc for data. The new discs' labels can be printed with inkjet printers or written by hand with water-based felt pens.
"The DVD market is growing rapidly," says Chief Information Officer Shigeru Tamura, "and on a global scale. The year 2005 should see sales rise to some 2.5 billion discs*1, an increase of some 79% over the year before. As users record graphics, movies and other data-intensive items, we've identified such increase demand for higher capacity DVD discs were needed. In April 2005, MKM introduced a world-first -- a single-sided dual-layer DVD-R disc with approximately double*2 the capacity of conventional discs. This product also features a unique MKM technology -- dual ink reception layers on inkjet printer-compatible single-sided dual-layer DVD-R discs."

Manufacturing of single-side dual-layer discs requires a high level of production technology to lay down the L0 and L1 layers, coat them with recording material, and place spacers between them.

MKM uses proprietary DYN-AZO recording material for recording DVD discs. By applying the technology developed for this organic recording material, MKM created single-side dual-layer recording media. In addition, MKM's advanced stamper technology, combined with ultra-precise substrate molding technology, results in high-speed writing and low error recording for superior recording and playback performance.
