Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation ("MCC") (Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo, Japan; President: Ryuichi Tomizawa) and Dalian University of Technology ("DUT") (Location: Dalian, Liaoning, China; President, Gengdong Cheng) today announced that both have reached a basic agreement on establishing a comprehensive industry-academia partnership for research and development to facilitate business applications in the fields of organic synthesis, catalytic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and chemical process. This is to be three-year partnership starting in June 2005.

MCC and DUT will collaborate in the MCC Group research projects aiming at realizing business applications, specifically on new catalysts and process development in the petrochemical field and organic and inorganic material design and development as key technologies applied for performance material for electronic devices and others.

MCC has actively advanced comprehensive research and development partnerships based on a new style that bridges industry and academia in Japan and the US. Therefore, the framework in this partnership is not conventional one: matching the seeds of a university with the needs of a company, either. This is for MCC the first comprehensive industry and academia partnership with a university in China. MCC intends to expedite research and development making use of expertise of DUT researchers in projects aiming at realizing business applications.

DUT that founded in 1949 is one of the most influential universities of science and technology in China. In 1960, DUT was approved as a national key university in China that only 26 universities are approved among Chinese universities. In particular, School of Chemical and Chemical Engineering, taking a leading part of the partnership, consists of eight departments, and also has the State Key Laboratory of Fine Chemicals that is only one laboratory in the fields of organic synthesis chemistry and organic synthesis process chemistry in China. DUT has impressive performances and has produced a great number of scientists to chemical industry in China. In addition, DUT is geographically close to Japan among overseas universities, and MCC and DUT have already collaborated in several projects. Therefore, it is expected to achieve significant results in this partnership.

MCC considers China as a growth market and performs positive business deployment from now on, as well as strengthens research and development while fostering relationship with researchers in China. MCC will further reinforce overseas research activities.
