World's first*1 32x Ultra Speed CD-RW Disc*2
TOKYO, JAPAN (Aug.19, 2003) -- Mitsubishi Kagaku Media Co., Ltd., (MKM) today announced the world's first*1 Ultra Speed CD-RW discs*2, which use MKM's proprietary New SERL+ recording layer technology. The new rewritable discs will be suitable for data storage, and will be available at selected retail outlets in Japan from October 1, 2003 .
MKM spokesman and CIO Shigeru Tamura said, "Our proprietary technology for recording layers, SERL (Super Eutectic Recording Layer)*3, has seen used in our 4-12x High Speed CD-RW discs and our DVD+/-RW discs. The New SERL is a furthermore evolution of our SERL technology that made its debut in our 24x CD-RW discs. Already, consumers have found these discs more than satisfactory, and have put them to a wide range of uses. "
Generally speaking, to make a recording layer work at higher writing speeds, the recording layer would be scarified stability of the marks recorded on it. As a result, data reliability is not much enough for data storage. The problem of writing at 32x while maintaining data reliability was solved with MKM's latest version of New SERL technology, said Tamura. With New SERL+ and strict process control, MKM was able to produce a 32x Ultra Speed CD-RW disc*2.
This third generation New SERL+ technology realizes the contradictory goals of high-speed recording and superb reliability. And now, discs produced with this leading-edge technology enable consumers to take advantage of the drive, which supports 32x Ultra Speed CD-RW.
"MKM now offers a lineup of discs for every sort of drive," said Tamura, "including 1-4x, 4-12x High Speed , 24x Ultra Speed , and 32x Ultra Speed CD-RW*2."
