| New Blu-ray Disc for Video |

TOKYO, JAPAN (July 24, 2003)
-- Mitsubishi Kagaku Media Co., Ltd., (MKM) today announced the imminent launch
of a new Blu-ray disc for video that will be compatible with the Blu-ray Disc
Rewritable Format Ver.1.0. MKM spokesman and CIO Shigeru Tamura said the new disc
would be available at selected retail outlets in Japan from August 8, 2003.
Tamura said, "With digital satellite broadcasts soon to be followed by ground-based
digital broadcast systems, there will obviously be a tremendous increase in the
volume of digital high-definition video contents available, and viewing of such
digital high-definition video should become the norm. In addition, the advent
of the Blu-ray Disc Recorder, which uses a blue-violet laser with very short wavelength."
The new Blu-ray discs offer much denser recording layers. The track pitch, for
example, is a mere 0.32  and the length of
the shortest mark used to do the recording is only 0.16 .
These numbers are less than half those of normal DVD discs, said Tamura. With
this technology, a Blu-ray disc just 120 mm in diameter will hold 23GB of data,
which is about five times as much as the ordinary DVD disc. In addition, the super-fast
36Mbps transfer rate enables the user to record about two hours of high-definition
video in the direct mode. In the long play mode, the disc can handle about 12
hours of recording, The discs offer stable recording and playback, thanks to their
high-sensitivity phase change recording layer and substrate that provides a precise
groove shape.
Each disc is enclosed in a tightly closed cartridge that prevents dust or scratches
from affecting the disc. Furthermore, cartridges come in matte white with a sliver
moon-shaped viewing window of clear blue.
MKM continues to provide the recording media the world needs in a timely and professional
fashion.
