Titanium Composite Material awarded as roofing material for The National Grand Theater of China in Beijing
Mitsubishi Chemical Functional Products, Inc.
Mitsubishi Chemical Functional Products, Inc. (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Masanori Fujii) recently concluded an agreement with the Proprietor Committee of the National Grand Theater to supply Titanium Composite Material (trade name: Alpolic fr/TCM) as roofing material that the company has developed by using titanium coil of Nippon Steel Corporation.
The Grand Theater is under construction in Beijing with targeted completion date of 2004 year end.
Under the concept of constructing a world leading multi-functional theater by the Chinese Government, construction of the theater was realized by adopting the design of Mr. Paul Andreu of the world's famous Aeroports de Paris, France. The theater has been constructed in the first-class location by the side of the Great Hall of People and facing Chang An Street.

The theater will consist of three halls of Concert Hall, Opera House and Hall for Traditional Entertainment with total number of seats exceeding 6,000. The basic design is an egg-shape dome of 220 meters long, 150 meters wide, and 49 meters high floating on an artificial lake . Its roof part is divided into two parts: glass roof and the Titanium composite material. Picture of completion provides an image of UFO landing on the surface of a lake, an extremely unique design. The company will deliver about 43,000 square meters of Alpolic fr/TCM from the next summer to the end of next year.

The Alpolic fr Series has a sandwich structure . Namely, core material consists of inorganic material bound by resin is sandwiched by aluminum sheets.
It has been recognized as non-combustible material in major countries including Japan and widely used in the world due to its lightweight, superior flat surface and good processability. On top of 30 year history of Aluminum Composite Material, the company added the new lineup by endeavored in technology development by focusing on titanium's unique tone of color which satisfies requirement from exquisite architect on the common understanding of the material which is "light, strong and rust free".

With the adoption of the material for the National Grand Theater of Beijing, the Hangzhou Grand Theater project team is studying to use Alpolic fr/TCM for its roof, too.
The company started to expand the market of this new composite material.
