Concerning Completion of Facility to Manufacture
Bisphenol A at Kurosaki Plant
Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation
Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Kanji Shono) held a completion ceremony at the plant on June 19 from 11:00 am., to cerebrate the manufacturing facility of bisphenol A (BPA, annual production capacity of 100,000 tons) which had been constructed at the Kurosaki Plant (Location: Kitakyushu City; Plant General Manager: Isao Oda) and which has started its operation in full scale since June this year.

The construction of the manufacturing facility began in January 2001 and the full-scale operation began since June this year, after one year of construction and test operation. The product of BPA is a main raw material for polycarbonate (PC) resins, which has a wide range of use for compact discs, automotive parts, components for other uses, and for epoxy resins. The demand for PC resins, in particular, is expected to grow about 10% annually worldwide.

Under these circumstances, Mitsubishi Chemical has promoted strategic alliance with Mitsubishi Engineering-Plastics Corp. (Head Office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President: Hideaki Ono) and other major affiliated companies of both Japan and abroad in PC resin business, and at the same time, has made every effort in stable supply of BPA. The operation of the new facility at Kurosaki Plant and the previous operation of the BPA manufacturing at the Kashima Plant, (Kashima-gun, Ibaraki Prefecture; annual production capacity of 100,000 tons), should make further contribution to the PC resins business of Mitsubishi Chemical Group from the aspect of raw material.

In addition, our company is expanding the production capacity at Kashima Plant with the completion date of July 2003, on cumene, phenol, and aceton, which are the raw materials of BPA. After the completion, the company will be equipped with a completely thorough production system of manufacturing benzene and propylene to BPA. Meanwhile, BPA was manufactured by our own technology in May last year, and implementation of our original new catalyst to the BPA manufacturing facility is planned in October this year. Thus, with the unified efforts of the manufacturing site and research and technology development section, the company plans to fully respond also to the needs of the customers in terms of quality.
