Start of Study on Integrating Activated Carbon
Business |
|
Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation |
|
Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Kanji
Shono) and Calgon Carbon Corporation (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the USA; CEO:
J. A. Cederna) have recently agreed to study the possibility of establishing a
joint venture company for activated carbon business in Japan.
Specifically, the both companies will study about establishing a joint venture
company in the Japanese market by integrating the business conducted by Toyo Calgon
Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Toshio Mano), a Japanese
subsidiary of Calgon Carbon, and the activated carbon business of Mitsubishi Chemical
aiming at July 1, 2002. Although the both companies have already agreed to jointly
operate the activated carbon business in Asia, they will discuss and decide the
details in 2003.
Mitsubishi Chemical has developed the business of activated carbon for water treatment
thoroughly covering from technology development to production and sales primarily
in the Japanese market. In addition, the company is making efforts to make the
activated carbon for gas phase use (for use to remove sulfuric acid and nitric
acid and to absorb dioxin) as a future pillar of profits.
Calgon Carbon is the world's largest-size activated carbon manufacturer, and it
also conducts recycling of activated carbon and sales of and service for environment
purification system devices. In the Japanese market, it develops its business
through Toyo Calgon.
The environment surround activated carbon is facing with severer competition as
the over supply situation continues but, on the other hand, there is a movement
for the environment purification-related demand to become in full scale due to
reinforcement of environmental regulations and the future growth is expected.
Under these circumstances, Calgon Carbon, which had been looking for a partner
in Asia, and Mitsubishi Chemical, which had been promoting to expand from its
business based on only activated carbon, agreed to study the possibility of integrating
the business of the both companies.
