Summary of Message
from President Shono for Mitsubishi Chemical Group Members at the New Year Ceremony
on January 4, 2001 |

Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation |

A Happy New Year to you all !
In retrospect, it may be said that the several years at the end of
the 20th century have resulted in an especial
period of convulsion for the chemical industry.
Beginning with the merger between Mitsubishi Kasei Corporation and
Mitsubishi Petrochemical Co., Ltd. leading to the start of our Mitsubishi Chemical
Group, we have implemented various rationalizations and reformations of business
structure.
I should say that the curtain of the 21st
century was raised, increasing the intensity of the survival war in the domestic
and overseas market.
By way of the conditions for us to fight equally on this vehement
field of competition in the global market, we made out the new Mid-term Plan at
the end of 1999, with a keyword attaching the importance to "profit and speed".
In connection thereto, the fiscal year beginning this April falls
to the 2nd year. At the settlement of the fiscal year, it is a must, by any means,
for us to realize the recurring profit that allows us to reach the final goal
of 120 billion of recurring profit and 6% of ROA in the final fiscal year
ending March 31, 2003.
In order to win the competition of the world level and for Mitsubishi
Chemical Group to develop greatly in the 21st
century, we will change our business structures, organizations and corporate climate
speedily from the viewpoint of profit. As to the corporate climate, we will introduce
a new human resource management system based on more performance to the managerial
employees in this April, through which and other measures the corporate climate
will attach the utmost importance, not to seniority, but to the successful outcomes.
By way of the keystone to support these changes, I would like to mention
3 essential factors:
The first is safety. Once again I wish you all to exert your best
efforts towards safe and stable operations.
The second is the rules of society. I ask you all to pay careful and
alert attention to the changing social rules and always bear on mind the observation
thereof.
Finally, the third is to have the new way of thinking that disconnect
you from conventional fetters. Without continuing to think along the conventional
extended line, I ask you all to bravely challenge changing the way of thinking
for the purpose of solving respective issues.
It is said that the 21st century
is the age of chemistry. And those, who can contribute best towards the human
society of the 21st century, settling various
issues in such fields as resources and energy, food and population, environment,
and difficult diseases including AIDS and cancer that are brought to us from the
20th century, are nobody but us in the chemical industry.
Having such dreams, self-confidence and pride, let's make efforts
together so that we will be able to become the company group that can lead the
age of chemistry in the 21st century and this
year can be the first page of the history of development of Mitsubishi Chemical
Group in the 21st century.
Thank you very much.
