Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation |

Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (MCC : headquartered in Chiyoda-ku,
Tokyo; Kanji Shono, President) will launched its Life Science - Business Initiatives
Department on October 1, 2000.
MCC Group has been involved with life science research and technology development
(R&TD) for many years since the establishment of the Mitsubishi Kasei Institute
of Life Sciences in 1971. By steadily pursuing new research, MCC sees life science
fields as an area for important growth in the future. Also other MCC Group companies
involved in pharmaceuticals, diagnosis, and clinical research (such as Mitsubishi
- Tokyo Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Mitsubishi Kagaku Bio-Clinical Laboratories,
Inc. ) have been making advances in life science R&TD and launching new businesses.
Furthermore, in September 1999, venture company, GenCom Co. was set up in cooperation
with Kyowa Hakko Kogyo Co., Ltd. and Welfide Corp.
As can be seen by the advances in the genetic analysis of different species and
recent announcements in genome studies, R&TD revolution in the life science
field is progressing at an amazing pace. The accompanying business opportunities
are also expanding rapidly. Given this situation, MCC is pursuing various activities
even more carefully for this field, such as group-wide R&TD. MCC is also carrying
out unified investigation, investment and evaluation of business opportunities.
For this reason MCC has established the new Life Science - Business Initiatives
Department to carry out these activities more rapidly and accurately.
Dr. Stephanopoulos, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of MCC, will oversee the Life
Science-Business Initiatives Dept. , and Mr. Kiyoshi Nakayama (current position:
General Manager, Agrochemicals and Animal Health Dept., and Planning and Coordination
Dept. of Carbon and Agricultural Products Company) has been appointed as General
Manager of the Dept. Together with the Department staff, they will perform the
following duties and functions in the life science field.
- |
Strategy formation for MCC Group in the field of life sccience
business and R&TD |
- |
Launching of new business initiatives and the subsequent prompt
transfer to business divisions |
- |
Handling communications for the Group companies and outside
organizations (consortiums, etc.) as well as overseeing Mitsubishi Kasei Institute
of Life Sciences and GenCom |
- |
Promoting and carrying out corporate R&TD in relevant
fields at MCC. |
- |
Monitoring and evaluating R&TD and investments |
By setting up the Life Science - Business Initiatives Department, MCC intends
to speed up the launch of new businesses in the Group's life science field, including
the development of new businesses by MCC Group using the research results of the
Mitsubishi Kasei Institute of Life Sciences. We believe that life science will
become an important field within the MCC Group in the future.
