SALES OF 5.25" SIZED MO DISKS
(WITH 8 TIMES CAPACITY)
Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation
In early May of the year, Mitsubishi Chemical Corp. (Tokyo, Japan, President: Akira Miura) is to release 5.25" (130 mm) magneto-optical disks with 8 times capacity in 3 items (4.1 GB, 4.8 GB and 5.2 GB) for sales, which are in compliance with the relevant ISO standard (a world standard).

In recent years, network building has been rapidly expanding among private firms and governments, while opportunities to handle large sized files, such as picture files, have been increasing, so that data have been growing tremendously, and the required periods of time for data storage have been remarkably extended. As a result, there have been growing demands for larger capacity disks, including 5.25" disks, for data back-up or replacement for network servers, etc.

The 5.25" MO disks with 8 times capacity to be released for sales this time are realized with higher density recording by ingenious means, including the reduction of the track pitch from the former 1.15µm (for 4 times capacity) to 0.85µm, etc.

Mitsubishi Chemical Corp., the top ranking manufacturer of MO disks in the world, shall be further engaged in the development of new products to meet the future market requirements, and shall endeavor for the propagation and promotion of MO disks.

FEATURES OF THE NEW PRODUCTS
1. 1. Higher Density Recording:
The shortest recording mark has been shortened from the former 0.67µm (for 4 times capacity) to 0.53µm through the improvement of recording membrane, the track pitch has been reduced from the former 1.15µm (for 4 times capacity) to 0.85µm through the high precision mastering and molding technology, and the recording zone in the peripheral section of the disk has been expanded, so as to achieve the memory capacity of 8 times. Thanks to various know-hows accumulated from the development of MO disks over many years, the expanded memory zone in the peripheral section can retain good stable properties.
2. Compliance to the relevant ISO standard (a world standard):
The newly introduced MO disks are in compliance with ISO/IECFCD 15286, a world standard, and are made in consideration of past assets and future compatibility.
3. Adaptability for rough treatments in the juke-box:
In order to prevent dusting by rubbing with the cartridge, the disk is attached on both the surfaces with slips made of a high performance plastic. Also, a plastic hub is adopted in order to suppress the deformation by repeated installation into the drive and to minimize the increase of disk eccentricity. Furthermore, a material with anti-static treatment is used for the cartridge to prevent possible noise generation by static discharge from the static-charged cartridge of a juke-box system which is expectable to be operated continuously.
