MCC, University of California, Santa Barbara
to Extend R&D Alliance in Advanced Functional Materials
Mitsubishi Chemcial Corporation

Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (MCC; Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, President: Hiroaki Ishizuka) and the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB; California, USA) have agreed to extend their agreement for a comprehensive R&D alliance in the field of advanced functional materials for four years, beginning in September 2014. MCC and UCSB entered the R&D alliance in 2001 and have worked cooperatively on various research initiatives for the past 13 years.

MCC and UCSB used funds from MCC to establish the Mitsubishi Chemical Center for Advanced Materials (MC-CAM; Director: Dr. Glenn Fredrickson [inaugurated as CTO and Managing Executive Officer of Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Corporation as of April 2014]) on the UCSB campus in 2001. The center has pushed ahead with R&D related to breakthrough novel materials, devices, and process and analysis technologies. Over the four-year extension of the pact, MCC will provide an additional $4 million in R&D funding to UCSB.

During the past 13 years of R&D, MC-CAM has published 130 academic papers, and applied for more than 100 patents, mostly in the field of organic functional materials. This ranks MC-CAM as one of the world’s leading university research organizations in terms of intellectual property development.

Current MC-CAM R&D focuses on high value-added advanced functional materials, including LED lighting, organic photovoltaics, and organic photo-semiconductors, which reflect the long-term vision of the Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Group. As an example of its success, MC-CAM reached the world’s highest levels of carrier mobility for organic thin film transistors (OTFTs).

By extending its comprehensive R&D alliance with UCSB, MCC intends to further boost the scientific and technological level of the MCC Group’s overall R&D operations. This should result in more efficient technological development, and the Group aims to turn the effects of this research into viable businesses as smoothly and as quickly as possible.
