Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation President Hiroaki Ishizuka’s Address
at the New Employee Initiation Ceremony (Summary)
Mitsubishi Chemcial Corporation

Execute strategies with simple honesty to overcome the predicament
The world economy has continued to show overall strength, while Japan’s political scene is quite stable and the concerns about low stock market prices and a depreciated yen continue to fade, although its economy faces some concern because of the impending rise in the consumption tax.
On the one hand, the Mitsubishi Chemical Group has escaped its worst time in recent history as far as profit and loss is concerned, but we still have to say it will yet take time to get our fiscal results back to where they should be. Aiming toward total recovery and future growth, we are faithfully executing the measures in the Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Group medium-term management plan-APTSIS 15.

As a professional, work to become the driving force behind change
We would like everyone entering the company today to invest time and energy in becoming a first-rate professional in your field. Employees at a manufacturer must maintain relationships across departmental lines and with all kinds of people, and if anyone is unable to function properly, the company cannot truly succeed. I hope that no matter what department you are assigned to, you will do your job to the best of your ability and become a first-rate professional. And I hope you will each become a driving force behind change. The chemical industry creates new value for society, making core use of chemical technologies, and it is the destiny of the industry to constantly change for the better. Meet the challenge. Never fear making a mistake. Continue to energize the company. That is your role.

Become a person who is comfortable on the world stage
Starting today, you will spend three days submerged in the English language as part of your introductory training. But success on the global stage demands more than ability in foreign languages.
I was posted to Taiwan in 1987 and spent nearly six years setting up a nylon resin production and marketing company. That was right at the peak of the economic bubble. At that time, what was conventional in Japan was conventional around the world, and Japanese management methods were the world standard, or so we were told. But when I started working in Taiwan, I found that Japan’s conventions did not apply at all. What I am saying is, Taiwan had its own ways of doing things, and I found that out quickly and thoroughly. To be successful in business abroad, you must learn your host country's culture and history, improve your understanding of its people, and learn to hold the same values as they do. That's what will give you a global sense, and that is something I learned the hard way.
I hope you will all make the most of your individual strengths, respect your fellow company members, and grow into new and stronger people who can do good work anywhere on the globe.

My message to those entering the company-inscrutable are the ways of heaven, fortune is unpredictable and changeable
“Inscrutable are the ways of heaven, fortune is unpredictable and changeable.”
This proverb tells us that “Life will be interchanging periods of happiness and unhappiness, so it’s almost impossible to predict happiness or sorrow.” Still, I think the true meaning of this proverb needs deeper interpretation. I think what it really says is, no matter what is happening at the moment, no matter how difficult the situation is, don't turn your eyes away, think it through, don’t give up, and push forward with all your might to do what needs to be done. If you do that, a way will always open up and you can alter the situation. On the other hand, when all is going well, you should imagine the worst possible thing that could happen and prepare for it. From this day on, in your work and in your private life, you will certainly have to face various difficult times. Still, remember the proverb: Inscrutable are the ways of heaven, fortune is unpredictable and changeable. Learn from it. Work to give yourself toughness and vitality, and the strength necessary to overcome bad times.
