Wellthy Corporation

Wellthy Corporation (Headquarters: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; President: Eiji Miyata; hereinafter “Wellthy”), a company in the group of Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Hitoshi Ochi; hereinafter “MCC”), is pleased to announce that Wellthy has established a joint venture with Myanmar Water Engineering & Products Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Yangon, the Republic of the Union of Myanmar; Representative: Khin Maung Win; hereinafter “MWEP”) to undertake business operations associated with water treatment, including engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) and water quality analysis, and that the joint venture is set to begin operations on July 10, 2017.

In Myanmar, which maintains fast economic growth, it has become an urgent issue even in megalopolis Yangon to resolve problems related to water supply and sewerage systems, including their management systems, such as a low rate of waterworks penetration and aging water facilities. Meanwhile, it is also required to adopt advanced technology for purifying drinking water, including water quality analysis, due to such factors as highly turbid river water stemming from a longer rainy season than before, apparently affected by climate change, and the spread of seawater to upstream areas (river water salination) caused by a longer dry season.

Seeking to exploit Myanmar’s clean water market, Wellthy launched marketing in 2014 together with MWEP, a local engineering company, and has conducted demonstration tests of drinking water supply equipment since 2016 using river water in Yangon Region as a water source. The tests were completed recently, resulting in the full accumulation of know-how necessary for commercial operations acquired through the running of equipment, maintenance, training of technical experts, etc., in a severe environment involving radical changes in the density of turbidity, saline content and other factors. Against that background, Wellthy has decided to commence EPC, water quality analysis and other businesses focused on water purification in Myanmar through the joint venture.

Wellthy is a pioneer and leading company in the industry that converts groundwater into drinking water, engaged mainly in a “groundwater membrane filtration system” which is a decentralized water supply system featuring the use of dual water sources at facilities -- groundwater and public water supply. The company has listed the expansion of overseas projects as a medium- to long-term target of its activities. The joint venture will contribute to the achievement of U.N.-set sustainable development goals (SDGs) through the expanded adoption of environmentally friendly technologies and to the realization of a “KAITEKI” (comfortable) society championed by the Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Group by undertaking integrated solutions business putting together Wellthy’s strengths -- engineering and water quality analysis.
